Alesi Italian Restaurant & Pizza House - 4110 Johnston St. Lafayette's original pizza house, specializing in spaghetti, ravioli, pizza, and other southern Italian dishes. 984-1823.
 
Bonnie Bell's Bistro - 407 Brook Ave. (off St. Mary, near campus and Old Tyme Grocery). Good pasta, soups, and sandwiches, including vegetarian options. Excellent burgers, too. Parking is sometimes hard to find. 234-6776.
 
Café Lola - 1155 Coolidge St. (in the Oil Center). Cozy café/deli with great soups, sandwiches, and salads. Good vegetarian selections; homemade tortilla chips. 235-4566.

Cedar Grocery & Deli - 1115 Jefferson. Excellent Syrian-Lebanese food. A great place for vegetarians and carnivores alike. Specialty sandwiches and muffalattas. Hummus on a warm pita is a bargain at $2 or so. Lunch only. 233-5460.
 
Chili's Grill & Bar - 1734 W. Pinhook. Close to the Hilton. A popular chain restaurant featuring Mexican food. 235-6570.
 
Chris' Poboys - 1930 W. Pinhook Rd. New Orleans style poboys, seafood platters, muffulettas, salads. Convenient and good. 234-6333. The downtown location is at 631 Jefferson St. 234-1696.
 
Creole Lunch House - 713 12th St. Good homestyle Creole food in a family atmosphere. A favorite lunch place with great stuffed bread and baked chicken. 232-9929.
 
Damascus - 102 Arnould Blvd. (off Johnston), Lafayette. Good Lebanese/Greek cuisine. Sandwiches (especially vegetarian yogurt sandwich) recommended. 989-0201.
 
Dean-O's - 305 Bertrand Drive. Pizza with a cajun twist. Try the crab-laden Marie Leveaux, or the spicy Cajun Executioner. Crawfish nachos, spinach salad, and spinach-artichoke dip are also good. 233-5446.
 
Dwyer's - 323 Jefferson St. A comfortable downtown diner with great breakfast, coffee, and plate lunches. Big portions and very reasonable prices. 235-9364.
 
Edie's Restaurant - 1895 W. Pinhook Rd. In Acadian Village Shopping Center (Corner of Pinhook and K. Saloom Rd), next to Old America Store. Good spicy homestyle cooking. Great daily lunch specials. Nice atmosphere. Fabulous buttermilk biscuits. 11am-2pm Mon.-Fri. 234-2485.
 
Gallagher's - 403 E. University Ave. Family style cafeteria serving home cooking style Cajun and Creole food. Very popular lunch place across from UL Lafayette. Good cornbread and rolls. 261-0493.
 
Guidry's Reef - 1508 W. Pinhook. Across Pinhook from the Hilton. Oysters on the half-shell, seafood dishes, 237-2860.
 
Hub City Diner - 1412 S. College Rd. From the Hilton, turn right on Pinhook, left on Bendel Rd., right on S. College). A local favorite. Classic diner dishes and atmosphere. Great friendly atmosphere. Vegetarian options. Good Blue Plate specials. Salads, gumbo, red beans and rice. Opens at 7am on weekdays, 8am Sat. and Sun. Breakfast, lunch and dinner M-Sat. Sunday breakfast and lunch only. 235-5683.
 
Judice Inn - 3134 Johnston St. Claims to have "Best Hamburgers in Town Since 1947." Very casual hometown atmosphere. Open Mon.-Sat, 10am-10pm. 984-5614.
 
Laura's Drive Inn - 918 1/2 Voorhies. Creole soul food at its best. Dine in or order to go. Hearty, decidedly not cholesterol-free cooking (but worth the risk), and SPICY! [Chairs should come with seatbelts] Plan a nap after lunch. 10am to 2pm. 234-3915.
 
Mae Sone Noodle House - 4807 Johnston Street, just behind Baskin Robbins. Impressive variety of oriental cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese). The most accessible and clearly Vietnamese restaurant in town. 406-0850.
 
Mel's Diner - 2956 Johnston St. Classic 24-hour diner with retro décor. Breakfast anytime. Great value. 235-6219.
 

Mello Joy Café - 625 Jefferson St (downtown). The lunch menu contains a nice selection of salads and sandwiches. You can also just sit and enjoy a cup of "The Original Cajun Coffee" in a relaxing atmosphere. 232-0006.

 
Olde Tyme Grocery - 218 W. St. Mary Blvd. Considered by many to serve the best poboys in town, and the fries are good, too. The Shrimp Poor-Boy, Oyster Poor-Boy, Meatball Poor-Boy, and Olde Tyme Special are especially recommended. Big enough to share. Served on Langlinais French Bread. Dine in or carry out. One block from campus. Great value. 235-8165.
 
Pimon Thai - 3904 Johnston St. Lafayette's popular Thai restaurant. Vegetarians can substitute tofu or veggies for meat in most entrees. Excellent Thai iced coffee. A bit pricey. Open for lunch and dinner. 993-8424.
 
Poseidon's Greek Restaurant - 103 Kaliste Saloom Rd., 1/2 block from Pinhook. Good Greek food. Open 11am-2pm and 5-9pm. 235-9154.
 
Poupart's Bakery - 1902 W. Pinhook. "An authentic Boulangerie & Patisserie." Not far from the Hilton and worth the walk. Sit and enjoy a French breakfast with a cup of good coffee. For lunch, have a sandwich or quiche. Closed Mon. 232-7921.
 
Siro's Bistro - 920 W. Pinhook, French-Continental cuisine in a casual atmosphere. "The ultimate soup and sandwich bistro." Chicken puff pie, quiche, French onion soup, salads, and stuffed croissants. Also serves cinnamon rolls, etc. Very reasonable prices. Open for breakfast and lunch M-Sat. 233-7476.

T-Coon's - 1900 W. Pinhook Road. Serving spicy homestyle daily plate lunch specials featuring fresh vegetables (nothing canned or frozen). Freshly baked bread as big as your head. Different specials each day. 233-0422. The downtown location is on the corner of Jefferson St. and Convent. 232-3803.
 
The Green Olive - 2441 W. Congress. Lebanese Cuisine. Excellent vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Great daily lunch specials. (The meatless baked eggplant is a favorite.) 11-2pm and 5-10 pm. 234-0004.
 
Whole Wheatery Eatery - 927 Harding. Located in the Oil Center, next to Health Food Store. Great Greek spinach pie, vegetable plate, vegetable lasagna, salads, and sandwiches. Good vegetarian menu. Open for lunch through early afternoon, Mon.-Sat. 269-0144.
 
Zeus Greek & Lebanese Café- 1103 W. Pinhook Road (in the Oil Center). Downtown location - 431 Jefferson St. Great Chicken Schwerma; several vegetarian options. Open 7 days; Sun. lunch only. Pinhook: 269-1434; Downtown: 234 8955.
