Dennis HumphreyDennis Humphrey, a 2001 Ph.D, was born in Fremont, California
in 1966, and as a navy brat, he was raised practically everywhere else. After
dropping out of high school to pursue the love of his teen-aged life to
another state, he earned a GED and worked at a nuclear power plant to earn
enough money for his first year of college. He then sold four years of his
life to the U.S. Army in exchange for an ROTC scholarship. He subsequently
served four years on active duty as an army aviator, and when not working
feverishly to complete his dissertation or playing basketball, he continues
to serve in the Army National Guard. In 1998 he was awarded a University
Fellowship to pursue a Ph.D. in creative writing at the University of
Louisiana at Lafayette, and he has been there ever since. He has published
poetry and fiction in Vortex, Southwestern Review, and Wide Open
Magazine, and he recently placed a postcolonial theory essay for
inclusion in a forthcoming literary theory textbook. |

One of the first things that struck me
upon my arrival to UL Lafayette (then University of Southwestern Louisiana),
was the feeling that I had moved into another realm. Acadiana is most
definitely its own place. Anyone looking for a change of venue without going to
a different country entirely could not do better than ULL, and the relaxed,
funloving spirit of the place will have you feeling at home before you know it.
Study abroad within the U.S. Then write about it. I know I will.
