The Robert and Bernice M.
Webb Award
for Excellence in Graduate Teaching
The Robert
and Bernice M. Webb Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching at the Entry
Level and at the Advanced Level was established in 1983 by the late Bernice
Webb, a long-time professor in the Department of English, to promote excellence
in teaching among graduate assistants in the department. The entry level award
recognizes outstanding teaching by a graduate assistant in his or her first
year of teaching college English courses, usually a student in the M. A.
program, and the advanced level award recognizes outstanding teaching by a
graduate assistant with at least two years of experience, usually a student in
the Ph. D. program. A faculty committee makes its decisions based on a teaching
portfolio and philosophy of teaching statement submitted by the student,
letters of recommendation, and other evidence of excellence in teaching.
