The Judge Felix J. Voorhies
Creative Writing Scholarship
The Creative Writing
Concentration of the UL Lafayette English Department has awarded the Voorhies
Scholarship every year since 1977 to the winner of a creative writing
competition in a specific genre (poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction)
judged by members of the Creative Writing faculty. The scholarship ($500 paid
in two installments, one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester of
the year following the contest) is intended primarily for undergraduate
writers, but occasionally, funding permitting, a second winner has been chosen
from among our graduate students in creative writing.
Any undergraduate at UL Lafayette with at least one full
year of study remaining may submit a manuscript in the competition, with the
following exception.
Undergraduates who have
previously won the Voorhies Award are ineligible to compete for the remainder
of their undergraduate careers.
In years in which a graduate
student Voorhies Award is available, graduate students who have previously won
the award as undergraduates will not be disqualified from competing against
other graduate students.
The genre (poetry, fiction,
creative non-fiction) each year will be determined by the Director of Creative
Writing, who will make an effort to ensure a reasonable cycle of opportunity in
the genres.
Announcements of the current
year’s competition will be posted in March by the Director of Creative Writing.
Rules for manuscript submission will be made available at that time.
