Call for Papers The Third Annual Graduate Conference on Language and Literature, hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will be held April 2-3, 2004. Dr. Steve Watt, head of the English Department at Indiana University and author of Academic Keywords: A Devil's Dictionary for Higher Education, will be this year's keynote speaker. Dr. Watt's major research interests include Irish American studies and drama and theater history, as well as the economics of graduate education and the state of the university. This year's topic, "Texts and Cultural Contexts," should be construed broadly in exploring both the texts we read, and the cultural contexts that give them meaning. This exploration may take many shapes. Possible topics and approaches may include: race, gender, class and identity, Cultural Studies, Folklore, material culture and oral culture, Theoretical approaches, Rhetoric, Linguistic, and Interdisciplinary approaches. Presenters may submit papers for the Darrell Bourque Award. This generous monetary award has been established to recognize excellence in scholarly writing, and is open to all presenters at the conference. To be eligible for the award, candidates' proposals must first be accepted for presentation, then the full-length conference paper must be submitted by the March 17, 2004 deadline for consideration.
