Educational History: Dr. Berkeley studied at the University of Leeds in Leeds, England as an undergraduate, and received an honours degree in Philosophy in 1987. In 1990 he was awarded a Masters Degree from The University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, writing a thesis on the semantics of vague terms. He remained at the University of Alberta for his Ph.D. which was awarded in 1997. His dissertation work focused the theoretical consequences of understanding the details of trained Artificial Neural Network functioning. While studying at The University of Alberta, Berkeley undertook empirical work with The Biological Computation Project.Research Interests: The interpretation of artificial neural network models as a means of investigating the representational requirements of high-level cognitive tasks, the foundations of cognitive science and the philosophy of mind, categorization, philosophy of language and the history of philosophy (especially modern philosophy).
Teaching Interests: Critical thinking, Artificial Neural Network theory, foundations and methodology of Cognitive Science, philosophy of language and the history of modern philosophy.

In 1975, he was awarded an MA in Philosophy by Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. He completed a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1984 at Australian National University.
Research Interests: relevant logics, theories of language, theories of mind.
Teaching interests: logic, philosophy mind and cognition, philosophy of science.
