Links for Professionals -- Links for Students and Interested Laypersons -- Philosophy Home Page
The goal here is to provide a smallish set of high quality links which will provide
access to the most interesting and useful resources currently available on the internet
for professional philosophers. The goal here is not to duplicate the many extensive and
detailed resources which are already available. Rather, this page should be thought of as
a page of 'meta-links', which provides an easy and reliable means of accessing the
(philosophically speaking) 'best of the net'. Please feel free to bookmark this page. All
suggestions, problems and updates should be sent to istvan@louisiana.edu.
- The American Philosophical Association This link
will take you to the home page of the APA. Most of the information a person could ever
want about philosophy and philosophers currently working in the USA is available from this
site. (this is a great place to look for that friend from grad school you haven't seen in
years). There is also information about upcoming events and various other useful links.
- The Canadian Philosophical Association
This link will take you to the home page of the Canadian equivalent of the APA. The page
contains information about the annual CPA conference, a list of members and some links to
philosophy resources on the net. This page is not quite as extensive as the APA page at
the current time.
- The PHILOSOP List
This link will take you to the temporary home page of the PHILOSOP list. PHILOSOP is the
oldest and (quite probably) the largest mailing list for professional philosophers in the
world. The PHILOSOP list is currently based at The University of Southwestern Louisiana.
This web page is still under construction at the moment, but nonetheless offers important
information on how to subscribe/unsubscribe from the list and list policies.
- The Episteme Links This is a comparatively
new site which offers many links relevant to philosophers. There are a large number of
links available from this page. For example, the page has many links to department home
pages, pages dedicated to philosophers and even links to philosophical humour! A very
useful resource. Note however, this site uses frames and so may not be user friendly to
people with older web browsers.
- The Guide to Philosophy on The
Internet This is another large site offering many links. The site is currently
arranged into topics, all listed on the same page. The site includes sections listing
links for philosophy jobs, teaching resources, projects and so on. Many of the links are
accompanied by a brief description. This site is very user friendly for people with older
browsers.
- Philosophy on the Web This is
another large site with many links and is based in Holland. This site includes links to
useful software for philosophers, a useful list of publishers, as well as a series of
helpful FAQ files. Another useful site.
- More Philosophy Links This page contains some more
philosophy links. These links are more specialized than the ones on this page. These
additional links were all suggested by subscribers to the PHILOSOP
list.
N.B. This list is subject to constant update and review.
The set of links listed here are primarily intended for current students, prospective
students and Laypersons who are interested in philosophy at USL. For specific details
about the philosophy program at USL, please send questions to philosophy@louisiana.edu.
- Why Study Philosophy? This link
will take you to a page offered by York University in Canada which describes some of the
advantages of studying philosophy. In particular, it highlights the fact that philosophy
majors do especially well on standardized tests such as the GRE, LSAT, GMAT and so on. The
claims made on this page are supported by empirical evidence. You will probably be
surprised at the advantage a philosophy degree confers.
- What Can Someone With
A Philosophy Degree Do? If you are one of those people who thinks that a philosopher
is someone who sits on the top of a mountain and adheres to strange doctrines, then this
is a page for you! This page takes a serious look at what happens to people with
philosophy degrees, in terms of employment and income. Contrary to many peoples
expectations, the evidence suggests that philosophy majors have significant advantages
over students with degrees in other disciplines (including scientific disciplines!). This
page also indicates career areas which are especially suitable for philosophers. Note:
this page is not always been accessible recently, due to technical difficulties.
- What is Philosophy? This document gives a brief description
of Philosophy, as it is currently studied as an academic discipline. If you think that you
might be interested in philosophy, but are not too sure what philosophy is all about, then
this is a good place to start.
- Philosophy: A Brief
Guide for Undergraduates This link will take you to a useful document produced by The American Philosophical Association. The guide
covers various general questions which undergraduate students may have about philosophy
and the study of philosophy. In particular, this guide has an interesting and useful
discussion of career opportunities for philosophy majors after graduation.
- Current Course Catalog This link will take you to the current
catalog of courses offered by the philosophy program at USL. This is a handy resource to
use if you are thinking about schedulling a philosophy class, as each course is
accompanied by a brief description of the topics which will be covered.
- Class Schedule for Spring 1998 This document is a handy one
to consult if you are thinking of taking a philosophy course in the Spring 1998 semester.
It provides information about which courses are being run. What time classes are, and
where classes will be held.
- Philosophy Curriculum This document provides the basic
infomation about what is entailed by choosing to become a philosophy major. You may be
surprised at what is involved! If you have not decided on your major as yet, it is worth
taking a quick look at this document.
- Minor in Cognitive Science It is possible to minor in
Cognitive Science at USL. This is a good way of getting into this exciting
interdisciplinary area. The Cognitive Science minor has a significant philosophical
component. This link will take you to a detailed description of the requirements for this
minor.
- The Philosophy Club
This is a club for USL students interested in philosophy and philosophical issues. New
members and even people who are just plain curious, are always welcome.
