Welcome to the homepage of STAGE!

Smooth Transition for Advancement to Graduate Education (STAGE) for Underrepresented Groups in Mathematical Sciences is a mentoring program, in cooperation with Louisiana Historically Black Colleges and Universities (La-HBCUs).
  • Southern University and A&M College – Baton Rouge (SUBR)
  • Southern University – New Orleans (SUNO)
  • Grambling University (GU)
  • Dillard University (DU)
  • Xavier University of Louisiana (XU)
Qualified juniors and seniors from any academic institution are encouraged to apply.

STAGE for Underrepresented Groups in Mathematical Sciences is designed to better prepare more students to pursue graduate studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) areas. STAGE envisages a rigorous summer training program where qualified students will be brought to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Lafayette) campus during the summer to work under the close supervision of a project team (PT) of four faculty members. The students will attend intense ‘crash’ courses on relevant topics followed by guided research projects. They will also be trained in other professional activities including paper writing, seminar presentations, and class-room teaching.

STAGE will help students to:
  1. broaden their vision about applications of mathematical sciences in other fields;
  2. enhance their inquisitiveness in solving applied problems; and
  3. experience a realistic graduate school environment which will enhance their ability to make a smooth transition from undergraduate to graduate studies.
STAGE 2012 Summer Program: June 4 - July 27, 2012 (8 weeks)

Each scholar will attend
  • Linear Algebra link course: Week 1 through Week 8;
  • Crash course on area of specialization (applied math / pure math / statistics): Week 1 and Week 2;
    [See project descriptions for details]
  • Guided research in the area of specialization: Week 3 through Week 8
STAGE 2012 summer support includes a stipend of $3700, on-campus housing and partial meal allowance.
