A Weighty Issue
Almost one in three Louisiana schoolchildren is classified as obese. One in five is considered overweight. These findings are from a recent study by UL Lafayette's Picard Center for Child Development and Lifelong Learning. More than 14,000 schoolchildren in six school districts participated in a physical fitness assessment program. Aerobic capacity, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and body mass index were factored into the assessment.

Lagniappe Week Race

On your mark. Get set. Paddle. Students from several campus organizations boarded canoes last week for the annual Cypress Lake races. The event was part of Lagniappe Week. Other festivities included the annual lake jump by Jebby Soignier and a 10,000-pound crawfish boil.

Engineering RobotFor the third year in a row, undergraduate engineering students from UL Lafayette placed in the top 10 of an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers robotics competition in Texas. UL Lafayette's team of Ryan Blossom, Josh Lewis and Trilby Lyons placed third out of 27 school teams in the most recent competition. They were tasked with building an autonomous robot that could transport expended nuclear fuel rods on a designated course.
