From Days to Arts

Famed production designer and UL Lafayette alum Joe Stewart will be the College of the Arts' artist-in-residence for the 2011-2012 academic year. He and partner John Shaffner have received three Primetime Emmy Awards for David Copperfield specials and one for The George Lopez Show. The pair also received three Daytime Emmy Awards for The Ellen DeGeneres Show and one for The George and Alana Show. He got his start in showbiz as an assistant art director for the soap opera Days of Our Lives. The college will also present Stewart with its Lifetime Achievement Award during the Festival of Arts next year.

Greek Honors
Several sororities and fraternities at UL Lafayette were recognized by their national organizations during conferences this summer. Here's a quick look at the winners:

Iota Omega chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha receive the Phoenix Award. It's presented to a chapter that has made positive strides in overall chapter operations for at least three consecutive years.

Gamma Kappa chapter of Kappa Delta received the Council Award last month. This is the highest award a chapter can receive. It's given to the group that best fulfills the standards and ideals of Kappa Delta.

Pi Kappa Alpha won its second consecutive Smythe Award. This is the highest award a chapter can earn. It’s based on chapter superiority and prominence. Only the top 10 percent of chapters in the country receive it.

Martha Bryant, a project director with UL Lafayette's Cecil J. Picard Center for Child Development and Lifelong Learning, was featured during a recent 30-minute BBC Radio broadcast.

She shared her research findings on the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program, 71 percent of parents reported reading to their children on a daily basis since participating in the program. Without the program, only 45 percent reported reading daily to their children. The program puts books in homes of families with children birth through five years of age.

American and European paintings collected over the past four decades are on display at Hilliard University Art Museum. They are part of the museum’s permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. "This is an opportunity for visitors to see some of the treasures we hold in trust for the community," said Mark Tullos, museum director. The exhibition is on view through Sept. 17.
