There was a special reason to celebrate Friday at the traditional block party that wrapped up Welcome Week activities on campus. UL Lafayette and Tabasco unveiled two hot cobranded logos. "This relationship signifies the sense of community that the Acadiana region has become known for," said Matt Tarver, UL Lafayette's assistant director for Trademark Licensing. Alums Lisa and Kevin Prejean of Prejean Creative developed the logos, which will appear on apparel, gift items and other merchandise.

Still Shining
The Louisiana BeauSoleil Solar Home is one project helping to spur New Orleans' solar industry. That's what Shephen Shelton said in a recent National Geographic article about Brad Pitt's Make It Right rebuilding program in the Big Easy. Shelton, head of a nonprofit that supports renewable energy development, said three happenings in 2007 helped the solar industry: UL Lafayette's invitation to build a solar home for the 2009 Solar Decathlon, a solar tax credit and New Orleans being named one of 25 Solar America Cities. The Louisiana BeauSoleil Solar Home went on to win the Market Viability and People's Choice awards in the 2009 competition.

Wear Red Day Sept. 3

Don't be alarmed if you're seeing red on Friday. Sept. 3 is Wear Red Day. So put on your Ragin' Cajun gear and snap a picture. Send it to wearred@louisiana.edu or post it to the Ragin' Cajuns Wear Red Facebook page. Bragging rights (and a trophy) are one of the rewards. And here’s a new twist: Schools will compete for a pizza party that will feature a special Ragin’ Cajun pizza.

Rushing Around
Sorority Rush

It was a record recruitment year for sororities at UL Lafayette. About 200 women received bids to join one of the university's five Panhellenic Conference sororities.

That's a 16 percent increase over last year. Last year, sorority members raised nearly $120,000 for charities and contributed more than 8,000 hours to community service projects.

Education's Best
What do Louisiana's Teacher of the Year Julia Williams and Superintendent of the Year John Bourque have in common? They are both graduates of UL Lafayette.

So are Middle School Teacher of the Year Debbie Reed and Elementary School Principal of the Year Mary Ellen Donatto. The state Department of Education recently named the top eight educators for 2010. All are graduates of schools in the University of Louisiana System. Congratulations!
