Powering Up
A center where UL Lafayette students and faculty will learn how to convert renewable resources into alternative will open next year. It’s the result of a partnership between the College of Engineering and Cleco Power, an electric utility subsidiary of Cleco Corp. Its first project: a biomass gasifer that will transform materials such as woodchips, rice chaff and sugarcane byproducts into synthesis gas. That gas, in turn, can be used as fuel to generate electricity. "The creation of this facility is another example of how UL Lafayette is fulfilling its role as a research university. It will open new doors for students and faculty to explore alternatives in energy and product development, while strengthening the university's relationship with its community partners," said UL Lafayette President Joseph Savoie.
