'Accountability on Steroids'
Acadiana has known all along that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette takes its job of educating future teachers seriously. Now, the rest of the country is learning about the university’s efforts. Washington Post and National Public Radio reporters interviewed UL Lafayette officials last week for news stories. The media attention comes after U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized Louisiana for being the first state to consider student test scores in its evaluations of teacher education. UL Lafayette President Joseph Savoie describes the state’s teacher assessment program as "accountability on steroids."

Simply Outstanding
 
Fall 2009 Outstanding Graduates

This semester's Outstanding Graduates are diverse. One student is a mother of three; another is a pole vaulter. But all were chosen by deans to represent their colleges on the basis of leadership, scholarship and service. During commencement on Dec. 19, one will be named the overall Outstanding Graduate for the semester.

In the Comics
Kody Chamberlin used to travel to comic book conventions as a fan. He would stand in line waiting to see his favorite illustrator. The UL Lafayette graduate still goes to these conventions except the tables are turned. He has fans wanting to ask him questions. The Thibodaux native tells the Houma Courier how he turned his degree in graphic design into a comic book career.

Getting Noisy
UL Lafayette's Performing Arts Department has won the semi-finals of theater competition. The department's production of 'Noises Off' was chosen as one of six productions to compete at the 2010 Regional Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. That's the academic equivalent of a sports team making it to the semi-finals in a bid to compete for the national championship.

Coach Bustle
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns® football coach Rickey Bustle made some new fans last week during a special story time with 4-year-old preschool students from Katharine Drexel Elementary at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Bustle read Born to be A Ragin' Cajun® – the story of a young boy who visited the UL Lafayette campus and grew up to be a Ragin' Cajun. The story time was part of the Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive being held in conjunction with the Cecil J. Picard Center for Lifelong Learning.
