Curt and Jarred Degeyter
When UL Lafayette student Jarred Degeyter signed up for the Louisiana National Guard four years ago, he never dreamed he would someday serve in Iraq with his dad, Curt Degeyter. But, that’s exactly what has happened. Father and son are stationed within the Victory Base Complex in Baghdad. Learn how the experience has changed their relationship.

Buffalo Bill CodyA four-week summer course will take 14 UL Lafayette students to Wallace, Idaho, the self-proclaimed center of the universe. Wallace is just one stop on a tour of the American West to be led by Dr. Robert Carriker, associate professor of history and geography. This week, the students are in a traditional classroom on UL Lafayette’s campus. On Saturday, they will strike out on a journey that will take them to Seattle and back. Along the way, they will explore historic museums, landmarks and monuments in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington. You can the follow the group, via its blog, as the students visit the burial site for Buffalo Bill Cody (shown here), the Oregon Trail and a decommissioned nuclear missile site.

Extra Special Effects
The animation skills of two instructors in UL Lafayette’s College of the Arts earned an award in the world’s largest advertising competition. James Tancill and Jeffery Lush were presented an American Advertising Federation ADDY® Award, for special effects in video or film, earlier this month for their animated film, “St. James Infirmary Blues, King Britt Remix.” Some former and current UL Lafayette students played a role in the instructors’ winning project.

Gold Medal Volunteer
Kelly McCarthy says volunteering is one of the most rewarding things she’s ever done. The 18-year-old UL Lafayette student spent more than 400 hours volunteering at a library and a museum. She also learned an Irish step dance along the way. McCarthy was in Washington, D.C., last week to accept The Congressional Award Gold Medal for her volunteerism. To earn the award, she had to set and achieve goals in four areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expendition/exploration.
