It's All in the Preparation
In the chaos caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, lots of people recognized that private and public sectors needed to cooperate. But UL Lafayette’s Dr. Ramesh Kolluru found a way to foster private-public partnerships. He established the National Incident Management Systems and Advanced Technologies Institute at UL Lafayette in 2007. Last week, Kolluru and his team joined state emergency preparedness officials to show off a center where they will coordinate efforts of private businesses and state agencies during emergencies.
 
Oily Mess
Dr. Suzanne Fredericq, professor of biology at UL Lafayette, and a team of students traveled to Port Fourchon, La., last week.

They collected samples of algae from the Gulf of Mexico, where a broken pipeline continues to gush crude oil. In a report for KATC TV-3, Fredericq explained how oil-soaked algae can have a detrimental effect on wildlife.

Cajun Ruggers
The UL Lafayette Rugby Club ranked third in the nation after competing in the USA Rugby Collegiate Division 3 tournament recently. It was the first Final Four championship appearance in the team’s 10-year history. UL Lafayette beat New Jersey’s William Patterson University, 43 - 0.

Champs of the Year
Dave ThomasDiana Simek
For the fifth year in a row, employees with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership of Louisiana have taken home awards from the National Manufacturing Extension Partnership Conference. Diana Simek was named Champion of the Year and Dave Thomas was named Group Practitioner of the Year. MEPOL operates in partnership with UL Lafayette.
