Spring Honors
When Alcide and Marc Judice returned to Lafayette from serving in World War II, they brought home dreams of a better life. These dreams resulted in the establishment of Judice Inn on Johnston Street. The two brothers built the restaurant themselves, sometimes with the aid of flashlights at night. Their work ethic and perseverance were passed down to generations of Judices and remains strong today. Alcide and Pearl Judice and Marc and Gladys Judice and their descendants will be honored during the UL Lafayette Alumni Association’s Spring Gala in April for their community and university support.

Old School Sports
| Dr. Edwin Stephens, UL Lafayette’s first president, is credited with organizing a track and field program in the early 1900s for the university and high schools in Breaux Bridge, Crowley, Franklin, Lake Charles, Leesville, Marksville, New Iberia and St. Martinville. He viewed sports competitions as a way to draw students to campus. His ability to persuade others kept the track meets in Lafayette despite heated debates. Writer Jim Bradshaw detailed how Lafayette and Crowley battled to host the meets. Read about it in his column C’est Vrai published in the Abbeville Meridional. |
