Better Prepared
Faculty at UL Lafayette received more than half a million dollars to help minority college students better prepare for graduate studies in mathematics and related fields. The $548,800 grant from the National Science Foundation will fund a pilot eight-week program at UL Lafayette this summer. Dr. Nabendu Pal, professor of mathematics at UL Lafayette who helped create the program, said it is an effort to reverse a national trend of fewer minority students completing doctoral degrees in math, science, engineering and technology.

Appreciation Week
A special week of activities is planned for all UL Lafayette employees from March 27 to April 1. Employee Appreciation Week starts Sunday with a family day at the Ragin' Cajun softball game. Activities continue throughout the week, including faculty and staff canoe races, a movie night, and “Coffee and Conversations” at Jazzman's Cafe.

Longing for Home

Solastalgia. This newly coined word describes a peculiar homesickness. It occurs when, instead of leaving home, home leaves you. South Louisiana residents have a deep understanding of it thanks to hurricanes, breached levees, coastal erosion and oil spills.

Dr. Glenn Albrecht from Murdoch University in Australia will discuss solastalgia on Thursday during the Louisiana Folklore Society's 55th annual meeting. The event, sponsored in part by UL Lafayette, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

Grad Expo
A one-stop shop for graduating seniors will be offered Wednesday at the Alumni Center. From 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., seniors can order cap and gowns, invitations and class rings.
They can also learn how to become a member of the UL Lafayette Alumni Association – at no cost – for a year
