| Better
Prepared |
| Faculty
at UL Lafayette received more than half a million dollars to help minority
college students better prepare for graduate studies in mathematics
and related fields. The $548,800 grant from the National Science Foundation
will fund a pilot eight-week program at UL Lafayette this summer. Dr.
Nabendu Pal, professor of mathematics at UL Lafayette who helped create
the program, said it is an effort to reverse a national trend of fewer
minority students completing doctoral degrees in math, science, engineering
and technology. |

| Longing for Home |
Solastalgia. This
newly coined word describes a peculiar homesickness. It occurs when,
instead of leaving home, home leaves you. South Louisiana residents
have a deep understanding of it thanks to hurricanes, breached levees,
coastal erosion and oil spills.
Dr. Glenn Albrecht from Murdoch University in Australia will discuss solastalgia
on Thursday during the Louisiana Folklore Society's 55th annual meeting. The
event, sponsored in part by UL Lafayette, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Acadiana
Center for the Arts.
