Research Heights
 
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is one of the top 100 public research universities in the nation. That’s according to a report by The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government. It describes the growing role that colleges and universities play in economic development and community revitalization. One example of UL Lafayette’s long history of using research as an economic development tool is University Research Park. Established in the mid-1980s, University Research Park has more than 575 employees and an annual payroll of more than $36 million.

Journey Continues
TEAM BeauSoleil is following through with its promise to bring the Louisiana BeauSoleil Solar Home to the people of Louisiana.
BeauSoleil Dedication During a dedication ceremony last week, team leaders announced plans to manufacture the solar-powered home. Negotiations are under way with Louisiana System Built Homes in St. Martinville to produce one, two and three-bedroom homes based on the prototype.
The team took top honors for market viability and earned the People’s Choice Award during the 2009 U.S. Solar Decathon in Washington D.C., in October.
 
 
CAVE Dwellers
A newly formed consortium of UL Lafayette faculty members is bringing supercomputing and 3D visualization to more academic research projects.

This approach could speed up conventional research processes. The Computation and Visualization Enterprise or CAVE consortium is an extension of the partnership between UL Lafayette and the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE).

An interdisciplinary team of 15 LITE Fellows will collaborate on projects that connect LITE’s technology and UL Lafayette’s brain power.

New Hoops Leader

Bob MarlinBob Marlin is lucky 13 for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball.

He accepted the head coaching position Monday, making him the 13th coach in the program’s history. Marlin comes from Sam Houston State University where he is the second-winningest coach in the Southland Conference.

During his 12 seasons with SHSU, Marlin produced an overall record of 225 victories and 131 losses – more victories than any other Southland Conference member during that time span.

Union Plans

Plans for the renovation and expansion of the Student Union are moving ahead. Last month, the University of Louisiana System board approved a plan to demolish four buildings: Coronna, Olivier, Guillory and Saucier halls. That’s just the beginning, according to Bill Crist, director of facility management at UL Lafayette. Crist said in a Baton Rouge Advocate article that more approvals are needed for the demolitions, which are necessary for the expansion of the Student Union.
