Presidential Regalia
|
UL Lafayette President Dr. Joseph Savoie wore something new with his academic regalia at Commencement Saturday. It’s a handcrafted presidential medallion that incorporates the university’s seal. It was crafted by Aimee Howard, an assistant professor of metalsmithing and jewelry. The medallion, which is about three inches wide, is made of gold-plated copper.
Howard painstakingly cut and shaped each element, including miniature versions of the state bird, fleur de lis and oak leaves. She then soldered the tiny pieces together. Experts at Stuller Inc., a Lafayette jewelry parts manufacturer and distributor, added a matte gold finish to her one-of-a-kind work. Savoie will wear the medallion during formal university events.
