Oily Effects

Several UL Lafayette faculty members are helping media explain the impact of the ongoing oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Just how much oil is being leaked into the Gulf of Mexico and how important is it for officials to report correct figures? How will the oil affect birds – including the brown pelican – that use Louisiana's coastline as a breeding ground?
Biology faculty members Drs. Paul Klerks, Paul LeBerg and Darryl Felder are a sampling of professors and researchers from UL Lafayette offering some insight.

On the Bayou
|
Part-time Louisiana artist Hunt Slonem has created new works especially for the Hilliard University Art Museum at UL Lafayette. Unlike his images of rabbits, birds and tigers, Slonem turns his eye to the striking flora and fauna of southwestern Louisiana in his On the Bayou series.
Louisiana Public Broadcasting's Donald LaFleur visited with Slonem at his home in Jeanerette recently. Take a peek at the artist and his works.

Teaching Democracy |
Dr. Robert Slater, a professor in the College of Education, will spend the fall semester in Caracas, Venezuela, teaching and studying at the University of Central Venezuela. Slater will be traveling as a Fulbright Scholar. His teachings will look at recent distinctions between developmental and political democracy. Slater's research will focus on reforms that President Hugo Chavez has instituted, particularly reforms attempting to democratize higher education.

| Reservoir Work |
Engineering students at UL Lafayette will use industry-leading software to study reservoir engineering thanks to a donation by Roxar Software Solutions. The company provided 23 software licenses of Tempest™ to the College of Engineering.
The software suite allows for mapping, well planning and reservoir simulation along with other modeling tools. The commercial value of the licenses is more than $22.5 million according to company officials. |

The softball and baseball bats for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns were on fire this weekend. Congratulations to the softball team as they advance to the NCAA College World Series Super Regional match up with UCLA.
And, hats off to the baseball team for securing a share of the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship. The team will be the No. 2 seed at the upcoming Sun Belt Tournament. |
