Each fall and spring semester, deans of UL Lafayette’s eight academic colleges nominate a graduating senior for the Alumni Association’s Outstanding Graduate award, based on leadership, scholarship and service. An Association selection committee then interviews each candidate and selects one to receive the overall Outstanding Graduate award. The Spring 2010 recipient will be announced during Graduate School’s commencement at 5:30 p.m. on May 15 in the Cajundome. Take a look at this semester’s contenders. |

By the Barrel
|
| A team of five UL Lafayette graduate students who are studying geology got to test their oil prospecting skills this spring. They competed in the AAPG Gulf Coast Region’s Imperial Barrel Contest. Here’s how it works: Teams are given data sets that include well logs, 2-D and 3-D seismic data, core information and geochemical data from an area of the world where oil and gas are produced. They must analyze that information and then make recommendations such as: “drill here” or “don’t invest further.” UL Lafayette defeated teams from the University of Houston, LSU and Stephen F. Austin to take first place. Josh Reamer, UL Lafayette’s team leader, said his group spent months analyzing data and preparing presentations. “It was as much work as preparing for a thesis,” he said. |
