Every fall and spring semester, each academic dean nominates a graduating senior for the Alumni Association’s Outstanding Graduate award. Nominations are based on leadership, scholarship and service. An Association selection committee then interviews the candidates and selects one overall Outstanding Graduate. The Spring 2011 recipient will be announced during the General Assembly Commencement at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Cajundome. Here's this semester’s standouts.

Dr. Patricia Crisp congratulates Comeaux High student Claire Beynon, along with UL Lafayette President Dr. Joseph Savoie and Director of Scholarships Adele Bulliard.

Dr. Patricia Crisp, director of the Office of Communication and Outreach for Region VI of the U.S. Department of Education, congratulated 36 top Comeaux High seniors who recently expressed their intent to attend UL Lafayette this Fall. The seniors participated an Academic Signing ceremony. The event mirrors National Signing Day, when high school student-athletes declare their intention to enroll at a particular university. The Comeaux High group was awarded a total of $127,000 in scholarships at UL Lafayette.

Can I Buy a Vowel, Pat?
On Friday, UL Lafayette student Andrea Michelle Tuminello will take her chances with the big wheel as a contestant on "Wheel of Fortune." The business student from Baton Rouge, will compete during "College Week," which starts tonight. Contestants were chosen by producers of the popular syndicated game show. The show was taped at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans last month. Tune in to KATC-TV 3 on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to see if Andrea makes it to the final round.

Grad Schedule
About 1,500 UL Lafayette graduating seniors will pick up their diplomas Saturday during Commencement ceremonies. The General Assembly Commencement will start the day's activities at 9 a.m. in the Cajundome. Ceremonies for each academic college will be held throughout the day in the Cajundome, Convention Center and Earl K. Long Gym on campus. Here’s the schedule.

Advising Excellence

Advising paid off for a group of UL Lafayette faculty members last week. Forty-five advisors with three or more years of advising experience received $1,000 stipends during a reception at the Alumni Center. Eight new faculty with less than three years of advising experience received $500 stipends. The university has been rewarding faculty members for exemplary advising since 2006.
