University administrators are taking a hard look at campus housing. Which dorms should be renovated? Should any dorms be demolished? Should more apartment-style housing be constructed? Or, are more traditional dormitories a better option? A recent request for proposals seeks the best comprehensive plan for growth. The proposals will be opened in January 2010.

Inquiring Minds

A new metasearch engine that can look through about 900 billion pages posted on the Internet. A treadmill that’s capable of moving in all directions. A new way to deliver medicine to a specific site in a patient’s body. These are all examples of research conducted at UL Lafayette. You can learn more about them in a recently published report, which also shows that the university secured a record amount of new monies for research and sponsored programs in fiscal year 2008-09. UL Lafayette is one of only two universities in Louisiana designated by the Carnegie Foundation as “Research University with High Research Activity” Other universities in the United States that carry that designation include Baylor, Clemson and Auburn. |

Whale Talk
|
A physics researcher at UL Lafayette has discovered that whales are good listeners. According to Science Daily, Dr. Natalia Sidorovskaia and her colleagues’ findings show that whales listen by changing their calls or “clicks” so as not to interfere with other calls. “In other words, whales are polite listeners; they do not interrupt each other,” she said.

Ring of Fame
|
Brian Mitchell joined a prestigious rank of Washington Redskins players last week. The former Ragin’ Cajuns quarterback was inducted into the Redskins Ring of Fame during the team’s Monday night game against Philadelphia. Mitchell holds many NFL records including combined kick returns (1,070) and combined kick return yards (19,013) and was the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 5,000 yards and run for more than 3,000 yards. He played 14 years in the NFL.

Luling Monument
|
A documentary produced by UL Lafayette alum Royd Anderson sparked a community to come together to memorialize those who died in the Luling ferry disaster in 1976. Anderson produced the documentary in 2006 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the tragedy, which claimed the lives of 77 people. A committee was formed soon after to memorialize those who died. The memorial was recently dedicated in St. Charles Parish.
