Some marketing majors from UL Lafayette know about sales. Kimberly Abraham, Joseph LaBauve, Peter Gervais and Jonathan Guidry proved it by winning the Outstanding Team Award at the Bayou Sales Competition – billed as a recruiting opportunity for some of the nation’s top companies. They were up against collegiate teams from across Louisiana. Abraham was chosen Best Individual Competitor and, along with LaBauve, will compete nationally.

‘An Obsession of Mine’
|
Author Ernest J. Gaines’ papers, manuscripts and translations have a new home – The Ernest J. Gaines Center at UL Lafayette. Gaines and his wife, Dianne, made the donation from their home in Oscar, La. The Center, which is under construction on the third floor of Dupré Library, will be an international center for scholarship on the author and his work. A short documentary that examines the influences in his works will premiere Nov. 15 at the library. “An Obsession of Mine: The Legacy of Ernest J. Gaines” focuses on what Gaines describes as his chief obsession in the last few years: preserving the community cemetery where his ancestors and others who inspired his worked are buried. |

Outstanding Alumni

A trio of UL Lafayette alums recently received the highest honor given to former students by the Alumni Association. Congressman Charles Boustany, Congressman Charlie Melancon and photographer Denis Reggie were recognized as Outstanding Alumni. The honor is given each year for outstanding professional and personal achievement. Boustany is serving his third term in office and represents Louisiana’s 7th Congressional District. Melancon is also serving his third term in office; he represents Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District. Reggie is an internationally-acclaimed wedding photographer who has been lauded as the ‘best in the business’ by Oprah Winfrey.

Surprise Gift |
Dr. Herman Hughes, one of the late Dr. James Oliver’s computer science students, delivered a surprise gift to the Computer Science department. He presented the university with a $20,000 donation to establish an endowed scholarship in computer science.
The surprise was part of the department’s 50th anniversary and the Center for Advanced Computer Studies 25th anniversary. Hughes is a retired computer science and engineering professor from Michigan State University and is a visiting research scholar at Georgia Tech. The anniversary celebration also included the naming of the Computer Science building for Oliver, known as the ‘father of computing’ at UL Lafayette.

Oil Riches
|
New seismic technology that can translate data into 3D and 4D images will help the oil and gas industry pinpoint undiscovered deposits. That’s what Dr. Fathi Boukadi, LAGCOE Endowed Professor of Petroleum Engineering at UL Lafayette, recently said in a local television news report. Boukadi noted that with this imagery and directional drilling, a lower number of wells would be needed to produce a field.
