Making Gains
Ernest J. GainesThe site of the only complete collection of Ernest Gaines scholarship in the world will open Sunday in UL Lafayette's Dupré Library. The Ernest J. Gaines Center provides a space for scholars and students to work with the author's papers and manuscripts. The university's writer-in-residence emeritus spoke with The New York Times last week about his home in Oscar, La. He and his wife, Dianne, purchased River Lake plantation, a place where many of his ancestors are buried. They built a home there and also restored the cemetery on the land.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns athletics added four members to its Hall of Fame on Saturday. Softball star Brooke Mitchell Garrity, track and field standout Winston Sinclair and football lettermen Jeffery Mitchell and Todd Scott were the 2010 inductees. Every year during Homecoming, the Ragin' Cajuns Lettermen Club Alumni Chapter recognizes select former athletes. Congratulations to this year's honorees.
 
Pink is New Red
Attention fashionistas: Pink is "in" this Friday on campus. Instead of wearing your Ragin' Cajuns red gear for something pink in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors will celebrate a birthday this year, thanks to early detection and improved treatment, according to Arielle Collado, UL Lafayette Colleges Against Cancer chapter president and cancer survivor.

Tradition Revived
The tradition of a general Commencement will be revived this semester. On Saturday, Dec. 18, all graduating seniors will be part of the procession during a 9 a.m. assembly at the Cajundome. In addition, Ph.D. candidates will be awarded their degrees and the university's top undergraduates will be recognized. Separate ceremonies for each academic college will follow throughout the day.

Broadmoor Elementary's take on "Lights, Cajuns, Action", this year's Homecoming theme, earned first place in last week's Paint the Town Red competition for schools. Students injected Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns into several movie classics including The Wizard of Oz and It's a Wonderful Life. All winners and participants take a bow!
