| Every fall semester, a group of first-time freshmen learns the ropes from faculty and staff through UL Lafayette's mentoring program. About 120 new students met with their mentors for the first time last week. These students didn’t meet the university’s academic admission standards but were admitted by exception after a committee reviewed their unique circumstances. Providing mentors is a way to help freshmen stay the course. "Research shows that if you know at least one person on campus, it helps you succeed," said Dr. Jennifer Jackson, special assistant to the president for campus diversity. |

The glowing proteins can help scientists literally see how genes are expressed or detect tumor tissue. In 1985, he published the first example of cloning a gene with coding for a bioluminescent protein. |
