Analyzing the Impact

Researchers at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are studying the rich ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico following the recent BP oil spill. Several professors received more than $377,000 in grants from the National Science Foundation to test and analyze the effects of the oil on the Gulf's mammals, crustaceans and other organisms. One grant will use mathematical theories to study the impact on the whale population in the Gulf, while the other grant will take a close look at the impact on crustacean and algae environments.

Time Change
Louisiana's Ragin' CajunsSafety concerns have prompted UL Lafayette to revert to the original 6 p.m. kickoff for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns’ contest with Middle Tennessee’s Blue Raiders at Cajun Field Saturday.
The game had been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. so it could be televised on the Sun Belt Network. But Athletic Director David Walker said safety for student-athletes, coaches and fans is priority one. Higher-than-usual temperatures can pose a threat to health, especially when combined with south Louisiana’s humidity.

Professor Suzanne Fredericq said a decision by the U.S. Department of Interior to have companies dismantle their abandoned oil platforms in the Gulf could have a detrimental impact on marine life. She told KLFY TV 10 the old rigs have transformed into manmade reefs that support ocean life. The Gulf’s ecosystem will suffer without these reefs.
