| Logos and Licensing: Trademarks |
| |
| "Ragin' Cajuns®", UL Lafayette's nickname, is a federally
registered trademark and service mark, just like Xerox® or Kleenex®.
Registering the nickname with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office defines
ownership and assures protection of the popular - and unique - moniker.
|
| |
| The University of Louisiana at Lafayette reserves all rights to the Ragin'
Cajuns® trademark through federal registration. |
| |
| The term "Cajuns" originally referred to residents who settled
in South Louisiana after being exiled from Nova Scotia in the 1700s. Today,
"Cajuns" is generally used to describe residents who live in Acadiana,
which is known for its music, excellent food, festivals, hospitality, strong
work ethic and joie de vivre, or joy of life. |
| |
| UL Lafayette was the first to adopt the nickname "Ragin' Cajuns,"
using it initially in the 1960s to refer to its football team. |
