USING MUSIC TO DRIVE CULTURAL TOURISM

The Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will find "The Sounds of Success: Using Music to Drive Cultural Tourism," on Sept. 19 during its second annual tourism conference.

Held on the eve of one of Lafayette's outstanding music and culture festivals - Festivals Acadiens - the conference will focus on Louisiana's musical legacy. From the Louisiana Hayride of the mid-twentieth century to today's efforts to spread cultural awareness through live-streaming audio over the Internet, the conference will tackle it all.

In addition to marketing music to a larger listening audience, tourism entrepreneurs are undertaking new endeavors to bring the musical tradition full circle with interactive programs and camps targeted at children and adults alike.

The conference will convene at 8 a.m. at the Lafayette Economic Development Authority office at 211 East DeValcourt Street. It will conclude at 3:30 p.m.

The Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism brings many of these musical movers and shakers together to discuss their projects, goals and hopes for the future of Louisiana's culture in this one-day symposium of discussion and sharing ideas.

Organizers hope each participant will come away with a heightened awareness of our state's wide array of cultural tourism avenues, as well as an awareness of other programs and people with the same intentions.

The topics to be discussed include: Memories of the Past: Promoting Louisiana Music within Louisiana; Beyond the Bayou State: Sharing Music with a Broader Audience; From the Ground Up: Starting a Festival from Scratch; and Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open!: Current Projects.

Panelists include:

• Kevin Fontenot from Tulane University, "The Louisiana Hayride: Some Thoughts on its History;"

• Shane Bernard from McIlhenny Company and Avery Island Archives, "From Goldband to Maison de Soul: Small-Town Record Labels of South Louisiana;"

• Ryan Brasseaux from Exhibits, Etc., "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On: Cultural Convergence at the Delta Music Museum;"

• David Spizale from KRVS Radio Acadie, "KRVS: Radio for Acadiana and Beyond;"

• Christine Balfa-Powell from Louisiana Folk Roots, "Why Louisiana Culture Resonates Globally and Proven Methods for Strengthening It;"

• Barry Ancelet from UL Lafayette, "Celebrating Enduring Traditions: Festivals Acadiens;"

• Herman Mhire from UL Lafayette University Art Museum and Festival International de Louisiane, "Growing and Galvanizing a Culture: Festival International de Louisiane;"

• Mike Luster from Louisiana Folklife Festival, "Active Commemoration: The Louisiana Folklife Festival;"

• John Laudun from UL Lafayette, "Introducing the Past to the Present: Louisiana Folk Masters Compact Disk Series;"

• Todd Mouton from Acadiana Arts Council, "Louisiana Crossroads Series: Showcasing and Stimulating the Regional Cultural Economy;"

• Cynthia Simien and Terrance Simien from 965 Management and Musical Artist, "Music Matters: Creole for Kidz and the History of Zydeco and the Zydeco and Cajun Music Grammy Voting Category Initiative."

Keynote speaker for the event will be Phillip Jones, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. He will present his address starting at 8:45 a.m.

To register for the event, contact the Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism at (337) 482-5703 or by email at ccet@louisiana.edu. Registration fee is $35.

As one of the six Centers of Excellence at UL Lafayette, the Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism has endeavored since its inception in January 2001 to provide an on-campus forum for tourism research and to assist cultural and environmental tourism efforts throughout the state.

As part of this effort, the Center designed a website to serve as a conduit of cultural and environmental tourism information and resources, including individual parishes and links to area attractions. Visit the site at http://ccet.louisiana.edu/ and explore some of the 1,700 links about Louisiana.
