| DESEGREGATION SYMPOSIUM SCHEDULE OF EVENTS | ||||||||||||||||||||
| A symposium commemorating the desegregation of Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now UL Lafayette) in 1954 will be held on Sept. 10 and 11. The enrollment of 80 African-American students at SLI in the fall of 1954 marked the earliest large-scale desegregation of a Deep South public institution of higher education. The symposium combines academic and public discussions of desegregation and the civil rights movement in Louisiana. Schedule of events: Friday, Sept. 10: • 9:30 am. to 11 a.m.: “Effects of the Civil Rights Era on Higher Education” Moderator: Gordon Harvey, UL Monroe Panelists: Amy Thompson McCandless, College of Charleston; Clarence Mohr, University of South Alabama; and Melissa Kean, Rice University Location: Abdalla Hall auditorium in University Research Park • 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.: “SLI during the Era of Integration” Moderator: James Wilson, UL Lafayette Panelist: Michael Wade, Appalachian State University Commentator: Leonard Moore, Louisiana State University Location: Hamilton Hall auditorium • 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.: “Religion, Politics and the Law during the Era of Integration” Moderator: Tiwanna Simpson, LSU Panelists: Andre Moore, Saint Anselem College; Glen Jeansonne, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and John V. White, LSU’s Paul M.
