| UL Lafayette will pay tribute to renowned author and UL
Lafayette writer-in-residence emeritus Ernest Gaines during
its seventh annual Black History
kickoff celebration on Monday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. The event will be held in the
Student Union Ballroom. Event organizer Dr. Jennifer Jackson said Gaines will make a special appearance and will have a question-and-answer session with guests. He will also sign books brought to the event. “ Another highlight of the evening will be performances by actor Roger J. Timber,” she said. He will portray Gaines as a young boy and as an adult. He will also portray characters from two of Gaines’ books: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitmann and A Lesson Before Dying. Timber is best known for his television appearances on Law & Order and Burn Notice. He also has appeared in movies such as Bad Lieutenant and Long Shots. Sigma Gamma Rho and Alpha Phi Alpha will perform a step show. Both are 2011 Greek Show winners. “ We invite everyone to come out and enjoy an evening of education, entertainment and gumbo,” said Jackson. The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the University Program Council, Office for Campus Diversity, Enrollment Services and Greek Affairs.
