| President’s Message | |||||||||||||||||||
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all of you for your past and present support of the Black Faculty
and Staff Association, and also say that I am truly humbled by your support
and belief in my ability and that of the executive team to continue
the work toward meeting the goals and objectives of this organization. |

The Association had
its beginnings in 1983 as a small group of Black faculty and staff
interested in providing support to Black employees and students on
campus. Since that time, the Association has observed tremendous growth
in membership and campus involvement and exposure. Every September,
we host a Welcome Reception for all newly hired Black faculty and staff.
During the month of December, we host an Awards Banquet recognizing
Black faculty and staff who are achieving excellence in research, teaching,
and service. Each spring semester we host an annual Black Student Achievement
Awards Reception honoring Black undergraduate and graduate students
excelling academically at the institution. The 2010 awards reception
attracted approximately 500 students, family members, friends and University
officials. Our annual Research Colloquium each spring during Black
History Month has grown over the years with last year representing
the largest group of presenters to date. |

The
executive team met over the summer and has planned to advance
and expand on our work in the defined areas of our mission
as an organization. As a group dedicated to ensuring equity, fair
representation,
employment
and quality of life in the university environment, we will
persist in stressing and voicing our commitment to the recruitment
of Black faculty
and staff by working with the Office of Campus Diversity
and the Administration. We will resume our work with the Office of
Enrollment
Management to
assist in the recruitment and retention of Black students.
For Black faculty, staff and students on this campus we will
continue to provide a forum for addressing issues and concerns. In
a new endeavor
this fall, the
BFSA has agreed and is excited to work with the Graduate School to provide
mentorship for the minority doctoral fellows in the STEM areas. |

These various
activities demonstrate our commitment to excellence and our desire to
be very active and visible on the campus of UL Lafayette and the surrounding
community. We welcome the opportunity to work with other groups and
organizations on campus to forward the ongoing improvements in the learning
and work environment on this campus, and we invite you to visit our
website often to keep abreast of upcoming programs and events. |
