Exclusion Guidelines
There are 3 general rules that parents should follow in excluding children from child care.
- The illness prevents the child from participating comfortably in the programs activities, as determined by the UL CDC.
- The illness makes the child have a greater need for care then the UL CDC can manage without compromise to the care of other children in the center.
- The child has a specific condition that is likely to expose others to a communicable disease.
Some specific conditions that require exclusions are as follows:
- Fever of 101 degrees or 100 degrees axillary
- Lack or decrease of appetite
- Tired, sleepiness or drowsiness in a child that is usually wide awake
- Uncontrolled coughing, irritability, lethargy, uncontrollable crying
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Nosebleed for the first time
- Foul smelling, purulent nasal discharge that is green, brown or gray in color
- Diarrhea 2 or more, diarrhea with other symptoms, or diarrhea not contained in diaper or by using a toilet
- Blood in stools not explained by diet change, medication or hard stools
- Vomiting two or more times in a 24 hour period
- Persistent abdominal pain
- Mouth sores, thrush or mouth sores with drooling or if child stills places item in mouth
- Any undiagnosed skin rash
- Diaper rash with break in skin integrity, fever, discomfort, bleeding or drainage
- Rash with fever or behavior change or any suspicious rash
- Purulent conjunctivitis (pink or red lining of whites of the eyes or yellow pus coming from the eye)
- Lice or scabies
- Tuberculosis
- Impetigo
- Strep throat
- Whopping cough, mumps, measles, rubella
- Hepatitis A
- Herpes Simplex
