Medication Administration Policy
Revised March 2006

Parents of child and the child’s physician are the primary “teacher” and “resource” for child care providers as related to the amount of medication, time of administration, route of administration and other related issues.   Our goal as child care providers is to “assist” parents in keeping their child safe and healthy.

The following are revision to the States Policy on Administering Medications at a Child Care Center.   Please see the office if you have any questions or concerns.
  1. All medications must be prescribed by a licensed health care provider (doctor, dentist, nurse practitioner), this includes all emergency medications and diaper rash creams.
  2. All medication to be administered in the center must have the following:
    1. Completed authorization form (obtain in the office)
    2. Side effect sheet
    3. Medication brought into the center must be in the original container with the child's name on label
    4. Dosing devices that suits their child development needs and medication must accompany medication each day
    5. Updated emergency contact phone numbers
  3. All medications must be sign in and out each day.
  4. No medication shall be kept at the center overnight.
  5. Instruction and Method of administration shall be provided to the staff by the parents.
  6. Medication prescribed to children on a long term basis, such as emergency medications or for chronic illnesses, must be accompanied with a health status and emergency health care plan completed by the child’s physician.   This information must be updated every 3 months.
  7. All aerosol medications for breathing treatments must be delivered to the center in pre-measured dosages.   A prescription must accompany medications daily.
  8. Any medication with instructions such as “as needed” or “PRN” must be accompanied by a clear written explanation defining when the medication is to be administered by the physician.

Cooperation and collaboration between parents and staff to provide for safe, appropriate administration of medications is required and mandated to assure safe and healthy children.
