Are children of mothers who were domestically abused more likely to find themselves in the same situation? Children of mothers who are domestically abused are dramatically impacted by the violence they witness. In 32-53% of these families, the children are also victims of the abuse. Children that are only witnesses to the violence often experience the same mental health problems that the abused suffer from. Exposure to domestic violence plays an important role in predicting a child's violent behavior. Men that were exposed to domestic violence as children are twice as likely to abuse their own spouse as opposed to men from non-violent families. There is no evidence showing that daughters of battered women are more likely to be battered themselves as adults. Getting Help: If you are concerned about yourself or someone that is dealing with domestic violence issues, there are many facilities and a variety of counselors that can help. If you are a University of Louisiana student and are concerned and would like to speak with a counselor, please contact the Counseling and Testing Center at 337-482-6480 for more information. The center offers unlimited confidential sessions, free of charge to all students and university faculty/staff members. Return to list |
