What red flags can I look for that may precede domestic violence?

People who abuse their partners' exhibit behaviors focused on gaining power and control, an indicator of a strong potential for domestic violence.  Here is a list of behaviors that are commonly seen in people who abuse their partners.  The more signs the person has, the greater the potential for abuse:

  • Jealousy
  • Rigid sex rules
  • Quick involvement
  • History of battering
  • Controlling behaviors
  • Threats of violence
  • Quick involement
  • Breaking or striking objects
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Any force during an argument
  • Isolation
  • Blames others for their feelings
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Cruelty to animals or children
  • Cruelty to animals or children
  • "Playful" use of force in sex
  • Verbal abuse
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (others see abuser as a good person; behind closed doors the abuser is abusive, angry, and aggressive)
  • Probably grew up in a home where violence and abuse was common
