The American Psychological Association (APA) estimates that approximately 4 MILLION American women experience a serious assault or abuse per year. This abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone. The following information is not an exhaustive list of resources for persons who are experiencing domestic violence. However, if you or someone you know is experienceing domestic violence, there is help, and you CAN be one of the many people who break free from domestic violence! If I am in an abusive relationship, what practical advice can you give to get out safely? If you are a friend of someone who is in an abusive relationship and you want to help them get out of the abusive situation, here are some steps you can take: What steps are necessary to obtain a restraining order against a significant other who is abusive? What proof is needed in order to obtain this protection? Are children of mothers who were domestically abused more likely to find themselves in the same situation? What red flags can I look for that may precede domestic violence? What local resources are out there for victims of domestic abuse and their children?
