Disability Awareness 2008

Disability Awareness is one of the major goals of the Beacon Club and of the SSD office.  Through awareness and education disability myths are dispelled and tolerance and understanding are realized.  We encourage all to attend and participate during this week and we challenge you to learn something new.

What's it to ME?
The following survey was given to a sample of UL Lafayette students.  Below are the results of that survey:

I am aware that ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia & other Learning Disorders are considered disabilities.
     Yes=452/483=93.6%      No=31/483=6.4%

I am aware that Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar & other Psychological Disorders are considered disabilities.
     Yes=415/483=85.9%      No=68/483=14.4%

What do you think? Most of students registered in the Services for Students with Disabilities office have a (circle one):
     Physical Disability=139/455=30.6%
     Learning Disability=262/455=57.6%
     Psychological Disability=54/455=11.9%

The correct answer is learning disability.  57.6% of the students registered in the SSD office for fall 2007 had a learning disability; however, this category includes ADD/ADHD diagnoses.  We are planning on revising these categories so that ADD/ADHD will be in a category on its own.

I know someone with a disability.
     Yes=426/479=88.9%       No=54/479=11.1%

What is your current major? Do you anticipate encountering people w/ disabilities in your future career? If so, how? (more space on back)

This question was sort of a trick question because no major or career path is except from encountering individuals w/ disabilities.  People w/ disabilities are everywhere - whether you can see the disability or not.  There were 357 out of 483 students replied to this question.  Of those who replied, 14% said they would NOT encounter individuals w/a disability in their chosen career.

This question was purposefully posed in order for students to genuinely consider the terms in which they would encounter individuals w/disabilities.  There were lots of good comments to this question.  Most comments were from education majors, speech and language pathology majors, nursing majors and those wanting to attend medical and physical therapy schools.  Obviously, these students would come across people w/individuals since it is in the nature of their professions.  However, interestingly, there were people who are not typically associated w/individuals w/disabilities that had comments which showed consideration and thought.  One public relations major said that “People w/disabilities are not uncommon in most public occupations.”  One criminal justice major stated that she/he would encounter individuals w/disabilities “through meeting people in everyday life and through the job.”   One engineer major said that, “in the work environment and just about every other area that involves social interaction,” is how she/he anticipates interacting w/those w/disabilities.
