Approved Member Activities
DAP members are expected to "demonstrate an interest in disability issues" by participating in at least one (1) disability related activity per semester. Below are some pre-approved activities. If you have an interest in participating in a different activity, please contact Dr. Kim Warren, DAP Advisor, for approval. ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES: Organization: UL Lafayette Pre-Professional Society. PPSs Camp Cajun (Spring) is a fun day for the disabled citizens of Lafayette and surrounding areas. It is sponsored by UL Lafayette's Pre-Professional Society. The Pre-Professional Society is a community service organization that consists of students seeking admission into professional schools such as medical, dental, and allied health schools. Volunteering with this organization for Camp Cajun is acceptable. http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/~srb6527/index.html Organization: American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is typically held during the Spring semester in Lafayette and in other cities locally and nationally. Mission: This organization which is committed to providing every opportunity for each person with a mental health issues or illness with communication to enhance leadership, education, and advocacy skills to create a better quality of life. The organization is looking for volunteers to help with the day-to-day operations of their office: filing, answering phones, and other administrative capacities. They are open from 8-5 M-F and are located at 601 Loire Street (by the LA Office of Motor Vehicles). You can find out more info on the organization at: http://www.meaningfulminds.org/. If you or any of your family or friends are interested in helping this organization with minimal effort, please contact the President of Meaningful Minds - Carole Glover at 234-6291 or at cglover211@bellsouth.net Organization: D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana. http://www.dreamsfoundationaca.org/volunteer.html is the link to the volunteer page, but you can maneuver in it to take a look at the different activities. They are focused on enriching and broadening the lives of children with special needs and those who support them. They currently offer sports programs and other activities, but they are expanding to build a support and information-sharing network. FHF is a non-profit, family directed resource center for individuals with disabilities and their families. It is a place families can go for information, services and support that is totally directed and staffed by parents or family members of individuals with disabilities. Organization: Rebuilding Together Acadiana. Mission: to conduct repairs for low-income disabled and/or elderly homeowners. Part of our work is increasing the energy efficiency of their homes, in order to ease the burden of high utility bills on the homeowner, and to reduce their carbon footprint. They have an ongoing project - ramps and rails program, where we help make a house more accessible to those with disabilities. The Beacon Club is a student organization at University of Louisiana at Lafayette whose mission is to work together to help eliminate barriers that students with disabilities must surmount in order to obtain their fullest physical, mental, social, vocational, and economic potential. Membership in organization and/or participation in and help in coordination of fundraiser events (typically Fall) and/or Disability Awareness Week (Spring) is acceptable. Contact Advisor: Dr. Kim A. LaCAN provides information and support to individuals wishing to effectively advocate for the expansion and improvement of community and family support services for people with disabilities and their families through email updates, regional workshops, regional team leaders, and personal contact. Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance, and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Mission: is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Haven Hills is a non-profit organization promoting the mind, body and spirit of developmentally delayed individuals through educational recreational and social opportunities for a balanced well-being. The Advocacy Center is Louisiana's protection and advocacy system. Federal law requires that a protectSion and advocacy system operate in every state to protect the rights of persons with mental or physical disabilities. The mission is to help give people back their God-given dignity by transforming lives to reach their highest potential. The Center provides families in poverty with full continuum of services including emergency and transitional shelter, skills training, housing and employment programs, licensed addiction and mental health treatment centers. The Center has a critical need for volunteers for various positions in our donation receiving area and the Well.Mart, where we distribute donated items.
