The final concert for UL Lafayette’s Symphonic and Concert Bands will be marked with a special performance.

On May 6 at 7:30 in the Ducrest-Gilfry Auditorium in Angelle Hall, the bands will perform a new piece by Composer Samuel Hazo, the composer-in-residence at Virginia Tech in 2006. Hazo wrote a memorial piece following the shootings in 2007. His work premiered at that university’s Spring commencement.

The piece, “Bridges,” is based on a poem written by Hazo and includes quotes from the Virginia Tech Alma Mater. Dr. Charles Triche, director of libraries at UL Lafayette, will provide narration for the work. Admission is free for the concert.

These two UL Lafayette bands are composed of students from all colleges on campus who perform twice in the spring semester. Works by celebrated composers like Gustav Holst, Leonard Bernstein, Johan de Meij, Frank Ticheli, Brian Balmages, Edwin Franko Goldman, and Peter Tchiakovsky will also be performed.

Two outstanding students, Holly Bui and Bridget Meaux, will be featured in an arrangement of the Flower Duet from the opera, "Lakme", by Delibes.
