UL's Journal of Arts and Literature

Rougarou is the graduate-run literary journal from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s English department. Founded in 2007, Rougarou is published biannually, with active columns updated regularly. It publishes an eclectic, resonant selection of creative writing and visual art by emerging and established artists from around the world. Past editors and contributors boast multiple chapbooks, books, awarded publications, and residencies.

Publishing Experience

Graduate students who work for Rougarou are introduced to the complex processes of curating and editing an online journal. With an expectation towards refinement of that knowledge and skill, students gain immeasurable experience for those aiming to work in publishing, start their own journal, and/or hone their writing and revision expertise through a first-hand understanding of the systems of publishing and editing.

A feature at UL’s AWP (Association of Writers & Writing Programs) conference booth and reading, Rougarou is an active member of the creative writing community, connecting through its social media outlets, annual contests in flash fiction or poetry, and monthly column pieces. Written by its editing staff, Rougarou’s columns give readers a sense of the journal’s personality and aesthetic, and graduate students experience in refining their ideas about craft. Past columns have featured interviews with artists, craft essays, and aesthetic interpretations of the South.

Any English department graduate student is eligible to be part of Rougarou, as training is done in-house, and there are a variety of positions to professionalize oneself:

  • Managing Editor
  • Copy Editor
  • Webmaster
